a hunting question? Is there one riffle all around that i could go hunting for bear, deer, and elk?
30-06 is up to the task.....
Except for the largest bears its a good choice....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/30-06
Its also as common as the sky is blue - So ammo is available everywhere at decent prcies......Is there one riffle all around that i could go hunting for bear, deer, and elk?
yeah. anything in .30 caliber full rifle cartridge.
take your pick, there's probably 1000 different choices.
I've got two that can take any medium to large game:
Mosin Nagant 91/30 in 7.62x54mmR
H%26amp;R Handi Rifle in .500 S%26amp;W
7.62x54mmR is a very inexpensive fairly powerful round. some with a limited budget choose to use this caliber for medium game to something as large as small bears. I personally don't hunt. with this caliber, its mostly for plinking and target practice.
.500S%26amp;W costs as much as .50BMG ammo per round, is the same bullet caliber, but much weaker. a wide selection of ammunition allows it to be used from hog, deer, elk, moose, bear. I bought my rifles for plinking fun too, but also to hunt if I ever got around to it. with the jacketed soft point 500gr bullets bear would be no problem.
most people use like a Remington 700 or 770, Mauser or other real sporting rifle. most of my collection is for plinking and target practice.
Beast of Burden makes a valid point, a .222 is more than sufficient to kill a deer, my first was with a .223. provided you are a decent marksmen. If you are looking for an all around caliber, anythign from the .270 to the 30-06 is fine and if you like the short calibers the .308. But since you are talking elk, I might say a little more punch is in order so my reccomendation would be a .45-70, or something in the .300 win mag range is a bit more suited. Since there is this descrepency look at an H%26amp;R NEF or Tompson Center Encore which are multi caliber and idealy suited for your requirements. So you can have one rifle with a larger caliber for bear and a smaller caliber for deer and even a shotgun thrown in.
.30-06, .308 are two larger hunting rounds that will do nicely. The .30-06 is about as close to a universal hunting cartridge for north america. Of course, on small game like coyotes its going to tear them apart.
And Im assuming you mean ';rifle'; not ';riffle';, which is a type of file that you cant hunt with.
* When you have a 30-06 you don't need any other rifle caliber for North American Big Game Animals.* Magnums are not necessary or needed when you have a 30-06.* Use the 180 grain or the 220 grain.*
It's no contest,..go with the 30-06, aside from the fact that it is perhaps te best all around big game cartridge, the fact that it is so widely used, means that you can get ammo ANYWHERE, %26amp; you want a ';bolt action';, Ruger Mdl. 77,..It is no contest here either,..With either a variable 2x7 or a 3x9 or a fixed 4x power scope,..,..
Take a look at the 7mm rem mag. It will give you the capibility of taking whitetail and elk out too 300, 400 yards if you need the shot. For bear, it has no problem. I use my 7mm rem mag on black bear and moose. This year i took a good 300 pound black bear, no trouble at all
Like the first guy said, the 30-06 is up to the task. So is the 308. I like the 7.62x54r, in my mosin nagant m1891-30. Pretty good, and similar to the 308, just a little bigger.
All the main high power calibers like 30-06, .308, .300 win mag, 7.62x54r, 7mm and so on. Even 30-30 but you may be pushing it.
Now for grizzly you may want something a bit less common and more powerful.
7mm remington magnum. it takes down bears and deer no probs. might be a bit of an overkill on elk though. better overkill than injuring an animal causing it to suffer in pain.
30-06 is a good choice aswell
I have always considered 30-06 to be a viable choice for all large game. As long as shot placement is fairly good any rifle chambered in this caliber should drop all of the animals you listed.
30/06 would work but not for big kig kodiak sized bears.....308 would work to but it would be just a little over kill for deer
I think the .30-06 is the obvious choice, but I love my .300 Weatherby for the larger game.
.308 or 30-06
30 06 or a 300 mag will do fine
like they all said 30-06 is up to the task but for grizzles i would go with a 7mm mag or .338
30-06 is your best bet.
savage .308 will get it done
If you know how to shoot, you can kill bear and elk all day long with a .222. If you need a 7mm Mag to kill a deer, someone should teach you how to shoot
I dont mean you specifically, i mean people in general. i should have specified
