Does a beagle HAVE to be a hunting dog?? ?

I am trying to get a puppy beagle but my mom thinks they are just for hunting and are absolutley not inside dogs..is this true because Idont think so.Does a beagle HAVE to be a hunting dog?? ?
No they do not, I have lots of beagles and some of them are hunting dogs and others are just pets, Miss Deanie is almost 2 and lives in the house and shows no interest at all in the pet rabbits.Does a beagle HAVE to be a hunting dog?? ?
my sister has a beagle basset hound mix and she is totally an indoor dog. I think its all on how you raise the dog, sure a beagle will still have some hunting instincts so watch them around other small animals and keep them away from dead animals.

My dog (chocolate lab) when a puppy found a dead bird in our yard and picked it up and brought it to me like his 'instincts' i guess told him to do. that was the only instance that i know of of him doing that, cause we trained him to stay away from things like that!
Beagles are a favorite family pet these days. They don't necessarily have to be used for hunting, even though that is the purpose of the breed. Expect your Beagle to chase small critters. Links to info about the breed are below.

If you're planning on spaying or neutering your new puppy, why not try adopting? There are plenty of Beagles and Beagle mixes out there. Shelter dogs are generally up to date with shots and have already been spayed/neutered (but some shelters jump the gun and fix before 6 months which is too young and could lead to problems later on, so be careful).
well if you get the dog before it is trained to be a hunting dog, then no, it doesn't HAVE to be one. your best bet would be to get one that has parents they weren't hunting dogs either. that way, it wouldn't be in its genes to be a hunting dog, and you could basically train it as a puppy to be an indoor dog. so, go for it!
A beagle would be a fine indoor dog. BUT.... they need daily exercise (like at least a 30 brisk walk both morning and night. They tend to be bayers (Can you say Ah-Roooo!??) Also - you MUST (I repeat MUST) have a fenced yard and should not be allowed to be off-leash except within a fenced environment (like an off-leash dog park that is entirely fenced). Also you must take obedience classes with your beagle. They tend to run if loose and will often ignore you and your Recall commands if their hunting instinct takes over!!

Not at all! I have a 8 year old begal and the only thing she has ever hunted is her chew toy! She is very well mannered in intelligent and makes a wonderful house dog! As a rule she is great with kids and get along well with other dogs!
NO!

99% of all dogs today are simply fat spoiled pets. Most people haven't a clue what their original job was %26amp; couldn't comprehend how they did them.

Too bad,eh?

Dear old mom doesn't know what she's talking about.
No dog HAS to be something, they are breed for that reason sure, but they don't HAVE to be, like not every lab retrieves ducks and fish. A beagle would be a fine indoor dog.
My grandmother had a really sweet beagle. It slepped inside and layed on the couch with her. They AREN';T just for hunting but are great friends.
absolutely not, they are excellent family pets, although they will ';hunt'; on their own in the house!!!
no not all beagles but mostly they are but if you want to buy one ask the people that sell beagles and ask them if they are hunting dongs before you buy it
No. they make great pets and usually have really good temperaments
