I am looking to buy a 357 or 44mag lever action rifle would these guns be a good all around hunting rifle?

I wouldn't be afraid to harvest a deer with the 357or 44mag rifle, been thinking the same thing too.I am looking to buy a 357 or 44mag lever action rifle would these guns be a good all around hunting rifle?
44 mag would be for under 100 yds but idk about .357 id get a .30-30 kid or a 30.06 im not sure but i think that there ammos actually cheaper than a .44!I am looking to buy a 357 or 44mag lever action rifle would these guns be a good all around hunting rifle?
Absolutely, however your effective range will be limited to only 100 to 125 yards with these calibers.* A better more practical Rifle would be the 30-06 caliber rifle.*
Pistol calibers in a rifle make sense for only some people.

Getting a new rifle for hunting? Get a rifle caliber.
If you want a lever action, by all means, take the 44 Mag, he has a lot more speed and energy. Lots of people hunt with a 44 and take deer every year. But they also have relatively close shots. Not more than a 100 yards with anyone I've ever asked. Mostly a great swamp, close shooting gun. I owned one for years, but finally sold it. My deer hunting can be from 40 yards to 200! The 44 Mag just wouldn't do that out to that distance! If you want to check it out, Go to www.federalpremium.com and check out the balistics for yourself. You will see what I mean by the 44 outperforming the 357. Federal has a balistics chart you can download on to your desk top. It's a great tool!
Best all around hunting rifle? Not. Handy carbine/rifle to have around? Definitely. The .44 Magnum is the better choice.

H
For up to about 100 yds.
I'm not a big fan of hunting with pistol caliber rifles, but of the 2 calibers you gave, the 44mag would have to be the top choice.
For deer sized game out to 100 yards or so, the 44 would be alright. The 357 would be a good choice for plinking and small game but for anything else go with the 44. As already mentioned a 30-30 or larger rifle caliber would be a more versatile choice for hunting.
As long as you respect the range limitations, a good lever-action carbine or short rifle in .357 or .44 RemMag makes a fine hunting rifle. And a .357 Magnum Rossi M-92 SRC makes a fine Social Rifle. They hit hard, recoil is mild, and you can top off the magazine without rendering your rifle unable to fire.

If you reload, you can easily handload a .357 Magnum carbine to equal the lower power levels of a .30-30 WCF, and the .44 RemMag can get into .45-70 power levels.

If you don't reload, I think you'd be better off with a .44 RemMag carbine. I highly recommend the Rossi M-92 Saddle Ring Carbine. It is based on the Model 1892 Browning-designed action and is considerably stronger than the actions of the Winchester M-94 or Marlin M-1894 actions.

Doc
They are OK but they shoot basically a pistol round. A bolt action riffle will have better range. The L/A should be good for hunting in wooded areas where you will get up close to the game.
for deeer, hog, and other game in a wooded area, yes a 44 mag will work just fine. The hottest 357 loads are just a bit shy of the 30-30, but just doesn't ahve the range. The 44 mag may even have a little bit more knockdown at closer ranges, but again the 30-30 exceeds it down range a little bit.

This would also make an excellent multipurpose survival gun, or a camp gun. What it won't do is work for elk and other big game or long range shots
Even if you own .357 or .44 revolvers, you should buy a gun in a stronger caliber. Even the lowly, flat tipped .30-30 makes the revolver rounds shot out of a rifle look very weak. I would say the an all around hunting rifle should have greater range than all 3 guns already mentioned, and should support a point blank range of over 250 yards. Pointy bullets delivered quickly are needed. Cartridges include .270 Win., 7mm-08, .308 Win. .308 Marlin Express, .30-06 or equivalent.
