Torchwood looks like a remake. Did we have a show in the past about a special team hunting aliens?

There are a few shows out there about a special team hunting aliens or monsters or dinosaurs or whatever... X-Files, Stargate, Primeval, Supernatural, Sanctuary, Hex, etc.

Torchwood itself was a concept by Russell T. Davies that he never got off the ground until after he got involved with the reboot of Doctor Who. Once he got the greenlight to do a spin-off he adapted his original Torchwood idea, called Excalibur, to the Who-niverse but gave it a darker edge.

There are a few things that set Torchwood apart from the shows mentioned above... the overtly sexual tone of the show, Captain Jack (who is funny, sexy, awkward, and sometimes totally dumb - however, I love how he is the man in charge on Torchwood yet is smart enough to step aside when he is around the Doctor), a bendable code of ethics, and character development.

I also love that Torchwood is an anagram for Doctor Who... while inferior to Doctor Who, Torchwood is a decent show that is getting better with each series.
