Why is hunting legal, but dogfighting is not?

There are several reasons, sadly. Hunting is still allowed partly because past hunting messed up the wild populations so badly that we have to hunt, just to keep the deer down. Years of killing predators who attacked livestock have made wolf, coyote, wild cat, and bear populations far too low to take care of the herbivores. And while many people hunt for sport, there are yet some people who do hunt for food, particularly in poorer areas of the country. Depending on where you are in Louisiana (where I live), some people consider venison a delicacy, and some people consider venison a necessity.

Dogs are seen completely differently that deer. They are not seen as prey creatures, they are seen as pets, and they are almost never eaten. Add to that the sheer cruelty of raising them in the ridiculously small kennels, training them for nothing but one purpose, and then killing or abandoning them if they are not vicious enough... While hunting can sometimes be misused by people who are only interested in trophies, particularly on farms where they release particular types of animals just so people can make sure there's one there to shoot, it is not as terrible a cruelty as the sheer waste that is dog fighting.

I'd personally like to outlaw trophy hunting altogether myself, but nobody asked me, so there. Why is hunting legal, but dogfighting is not?
Because hunting kills the animal painlessly.

Dogfighting tears them apart with sharp teeth and claws.

One is humane, the other is sick. Why is hunting legal, but dogfighting is not?
Following your logic: dogfighting should be legal too.
Hunting has a purpose, providing food.

Dog fighting is for illegal activities like betting and cruelty.
You must be referring to the vitters case.

I think treatment of the animal is the real issue.
in spite of all the lovely answers splitting hairs about why some animals deserve to live and others don't--i've got a much more cynical view.

people view hunting as a sport. people of all classes (in britain, mostly the super-duper rich) went hunting for food. deer don't count like dogs count.

people view dogfighting as their pets being attaked. it strikes our intuitions deeply and we find it disturbing. many more people have dogs as pets than deer.

keep in mind my favorite point--why must you notify an owner when you kill a pet, but if you hit a deer? move right along...?
Most people do not eat dogs. At least here they don't.
They aren't even comparable.

Hunting you kill the animal quickly and painlessly. The majority of hunters eat what they kill, therefore the animal didn't die in vain. The animal has had it's entire life up to that point to run free.

Dog fighting the animals suffered and get ripped to shreds, and it's only for the 'entertainment' of people watching. Usually when the animals aren't fighting, they are kept in undesirable conditions, like chained up.
Well This is a really touch subject but I will attempt to give you my answer.. Hunting is legal but is monitored because it provides food for people and is also a way to controll the amount of animals. For example deer hunting here in Indiana they will open it a extra week or two sometimes if there seem to be more deer in the area causing accidents or whatever..

Dog fighting is not right.. When A dog that is taught to fight another dog and kill it that is wrong .. Nothing but pain comes to the other dog.. And for instance when A fighting dog gets loss or escapes their owners the outcome is what my niece is now going through.. She has bit marks over 80% of her body. Dogs should be treated with respect and not taught to harm other dogs or humans.

I hope this gives you a answers .. Maybe not the one you wanted.
i see what your saying. but it still is sick. most of the answers are saying that hunting kills the animal quickly and painlessly but thats not always the case. but. hunting is legal because thats how it should be done. thats why people need to take classes and get liscenses to be allowed to hunt in the first place. I dont see the people forcing dogs to getting trained to do so. i see the people these dogs as a form of entertainment and no logic is behind that. it is cruel and the dogs forced to fight eachother are born for that soul purpose of dying.
