Pilot was the name of the dog in Jane Eyre, presumably a hunting dog because she was owned by an upper-crust gentleman. John Steinbeck's standard poodle (male) was Charlie, and poodles are actually hunting dogs. Hemingway had a white french poodle that he and his wife left as babysitter of their baby when they went out for nights in Paris. His name was Rufus.
