When hunting with shotguns are choke tubes necessary?

NO --- BUT - I don't recommend using your shotgun without one.....

If you want to have a straight cylinder bore shotgun all you have to do is replace your current choke with an IC (Improved Cylinder) choke....

Necessary?..... Realize when hunting if you use the correct choke your shotgun will be a more effective hunting firearm.....

Look here at this site for a few well written short articles on shotgun chokes and how to use them properly.....

Do not fire your shotgun without a choke tube in place. It will damage the threads and most likely the barrel in short order. As stated by the answerer above, which choke you choose depends on the type of hunting you plan to do. Improved cylinder is usually the most open choke that comes in a basic set. It is used for close in, 25 yards and under, and when shooting slugs. Modified is a bit tighter for 25 to 35 yards and full is for longer ranges or for times when you want a tight pattern in close such as turkey hunting. When hunting with shotguns are choke tubes necessary?
No, I have 3 shotguns and NONE of them have a choke tube. The downside is I have to use a different gun when I hunt different things.

If your gun came with tubes, be sure one is screwed in the barrel before use. Different chokes for different folks. All you have to do is decide what you are going to hunt and screw in the appropriate tube.
If your gun barrel was made to use tubes shooting with out a tube in it can cause damage to the threads where the tube screws in and make it pretty much useless.

Some barrels are made with a fixed choke and can not be changed, they don't take tubes.

Dave
YES. You need one installed whenever you shoot it or you will destroy the barrel/threads.
can you yes should you no
