Lived in Iowa from six years now (originally from Missouri, high-powers are legal). Muzzleloaders and shotguns are the only legal guns, other than a handgun, to use here in Iowa. I've used both and probably leaning towards a shotgun! My T/C Encore, with the Nikon Omega scope, is great for long range shots and extremely accurate. But, you get one shot! On the other side, my Remington shotgun is not so accurate, don't have the range, but I get 5 shots! During shotgun season, I alternate between the the two, depending on the terrain! It seems more often than not i'm carrying my shotgun though! Nikon does have the new Slughunter scope for a shotgun that resembles the Omega, which is for a muzzleloader. Oh and either way you chose, you cant go wrong with either of them guns!
In some areas where I hunt, I must either use a shotgun (slugs) or a muzzle-loader. I prefer to hunt with a flintlock muzzle-loader with patched roundballs. I like the challenge of hunting with a gun that the pioneers had to use 250 years ago.
Ontario has a rich history with the natives of the Americas; Algonquian, Ojibwa, Cree, Iroquois and Huron. Wouldn't it be neat to hunt the same way those people did back in the 1700s?
My personal favorite is the Mossberg combo Model with the following specs.

this gives you a slug gun and a muzzle loader \, just buy a turkey bird barrel and you have the best of all worlds.
I own a Benelli Nova I use for turkey hunting. I also use a Muzzleloader to deer hunt. My deer hunting slug gun is a Remington 870 with a cantilever rifled barrel. I use to only use muzzleloader because of accuracy and distance. I missed a nice 8 point and he stood there and I didn't have time to reload. It was my fault I missed, but still bothers me to this day. Now I shoot Hornady SST shells through my slug gun. They are accurate to 200 yards. They shoot awesome from my 870. Now I would choose shotgun with those shells. If you are dead set for either the Benelli or the Encore go with the Encore. If you choose the Shotgun I would look at getting an Remington 870. I like my Benelli, but the 870 is better. The pump is smaller and fits in my hand better on my 870 and the biggest problem with my Benelli is the pump rattles every time you move. I have had turkey hear it and bolt. But it does shoot nice and it's a workhorse in bad weather. To sum it up I would go with the slug gun. I would suggest a Nikon scope 3x9x40. I would go with a 40 objective Lens over the typical 32.
i live in illinois so those two are the only legal deer guns other than handgun. it really depends on the terrain if it is open get the muzzleloader it is basically a rifle. if it is very dense forrest get the shotgun. if you get the shotgun you can change the barrel to a field barrel(bird hunting). for the scope get any 2x-7x+ any thing will work. rifle scopes are nice!
happy hunting
i would get a cva muzzle loader
this is a really good one in my opinion
I know you didn't mention this, but I just found them and can't quit day dreaming. Have you seen the Bad Bull Muzzleloaders. Wow. That'll change the way you look at muzzleloaders. 3150 fps with a 275 grain bullet for over 6000 foot pounds of energy. Not to mention 1 1/2'; groups at 300 yards. Almost sounds too good to believe doesn't it.
