Hunting whitetail deer with a 9mm MP5 carbine, will it work?

My friend Theodore who knows little about guns just purchased a MP5 clone carbine in 9mm. He says that he will go deer hunting with it and shoot hollow points at them. Will it kill whitetail deer? I told him that it is not a wise choice.

Here is a picture of what it looks like, they are made by Vulcan Arms.

9MM doesn't have enough down range energy to successfully take deer.....

Look at this 9MM ballistics chart.....

http://www.shootingtimes.com/ballistics/…

As you can see the 9MM has only 275 to 350 foot pounds of energy at 50 yards....

It is generally accepted that you need a cartridge that has 1000 foot pounds of energy minimum to ethically take deer.....

The 9MM most likely will injure the animal where it will run off and die a slow pain-full death.... This isn't cool... It should be 1 well placed shot and the deer drops quickly..... A 30/30, 270 or larger rifle caliber should be used.....Hunting whitetail deer with a 9mm MP5 carbine, will it work?
the people giving answers seem to miss several points.

1) it is illegal to hunt with that 9mm.

2) hunting with a .223 is illegal in every state that I know of as well.

3) it is not only illegal to use that 9mm, it is unethical because it cannot guarantee a clean harvest, and in all likely hood will leave many wounded and suffering animals running around until the die from infection etc.

The person voicing his opinion that this will work for him to harvest a white tail deer with, needs to go back and repeat hunter safety, and stay out of the woods until then.

shoot safe
CG, I don't need a picture to tell you that a 9mm anything except for the 9mm Winchester Magnum would be good to hunt deer with. In OK it is not a legal round to use, probably other states as well. The 9mm commercial hollow point ammo would not penetrate very deep, and would cause severe wounding and a lot of damage to the meat. You are right.
George, you obviously aren't some idiot...

Why are you asking this? Yes, I get it, people do stupid things...

I've shot deer with .22, and I imagine a 9mm would do the job if placed right. Just not the wisest choice of calibers, that's all.

Tell your friend that it is illegal and unethical. Tell him that you are going to report him to the nearest game warden if he does go out into the wild with that abomination. The deer doesn't deserve to die having a 20 round clip dumped into him/her.
It may, personally I would only take that deer hunting if it was fully automatic, but a good shot could kill a deer. My opinion is that with that at sort range, right in the temple, the deer doesn't have all that great of a chance, but if you are serious about hunting you need at least a .223.
9mm will kill deer

it won't be really effective towards killing deer, maybe needing a couple shots

animal rights/peta freaks will be outraged if words gets out your friend shot a deer with an ';machine pistol';.

and the local fish/gaming wildlife department won't be too happy about it either. (as in 9x19mm is not a legal deer caliber)
9mm is actually illegal in some states as a deer cartridge. In Iowa the .357 is the smallest least powerful cartridge allowed. You need to find out if its legal. period. You can kill a deer with a Pellet gun at close range but you shouldn't try. First check if its legal, I bet it isn't.
9mm is a backup not a hunting caliber. That's the kind of gun you use if you hit the deer in the spine so its paralized and can't move you use to deliver the killing shot at 3 feet away. Your freind... I don't want to say is stupid but your going to hunt deer with a handgun caliber use a magnum.

My advice is he should go get a rifle with a caliber that can do something.
If you get close enough to put salt on his tail and are a good shot yes.

Shooting a deer at 100yds with a weak dropping round like a 9mm is a very poor idea. Many States won't allow a gun like that unless it has xyz muzzle energy.

Its very unhunter like .....dum and inhumane.

He will just end up with a scared or wounded animal to chase for miles.
That's an underpowered, cruel caliber for hunting deer. Unless you manage to make multiple hits, and then why do you want to damage the meat that way, when one shot from a correct hunting caliber would do the job.
only if he plans to get within about 20 yds of them (not very likely). the deflection on a 9mm is not conducive to anything but close range, and the 110 grains of a jhp is too light to take down a deer.

Keep this clown out of the woods.
will it kill a deer? yes. is it a good round to use for deer hunting? hell no!

Also, tell your friend to check his state hunting regulations, because in most states, it is illegal to use a 9mm to hunt deer with.
no it won't, that deer will just run off and hell never see it again, that guy is a jackass, get a 30-06 or .270 with the money hes spending on that he could easily afford a top of the line deer/bear/elk rifle.
Ethically no and legally no. You would be cruel to the animal, the rifle uses a pistol round,a no-no, the only magazine listed is 30rds, another no-no.
It's not legal in my state. A .223 is legal, that's about as small as you can go I think. Tell him to trade it in for a Sara Jane (30-30). He'll be much happier with that.
* No, very bad idea.* With friends like that you don't need any enemy's.* Pick your friends wisely.* Hes a jerk.*
Your friend is either (1) pulling your leg (2) a complete idiot or (3) a slob hunter. You're absolutely right: it's such an unwise choice as to be unthinkable for any normal sportsman.
I think he has a good chance of hitting it but whether he will just wound or kill the deer is a nother question. Hollow points strike me as unsportsmanlike and cruel.
Tell your friend to get a high powered rifle caliber in the 7.62/.30 caliber category and dump that piece of crap.
Tell your buddy to do more research, 9mm is not good for deer. Get at least a .223 rifle for deer.
No, it won't unless he gets a head shot. He doesn't need to shoot at deer with that.
Will it kill them? Yes.

Will you be able to eat them after? Probably not.

Does it sound like a good idea? No way.
He had better be using the hottest +P+ammo around. That thing looks like ****
Yeah, but the deer won't like it much.
Your friend is a moron.
it is illegal and that is all he needs to know
